Unfair Taxation - Motion to be Presented at UBCM!
Oct 2011 Update - Although the resolution did not go through at UBCM (there was not enough time), we would like to thank Mayor Phil Kent and Councillor Joe Thorne for lobbying on our behalf and taking the time to personally speak with the Minister of Finance regarding the unfair taxation of biofuels in B.C. The next step is to take this issue forward to the Province!
Sep 2011 - Some good news! Last week Brian Roberts, CB-DC's President presented to Duncan City Council with the attached information on the unfair taxation of biofuels in BC. Less than an hour later Council unanimously agreed to take the following motion forward at the upcoming UBCM meeting:
Whereas the Province of BC has mandated the reduction of fossil carbon emissions and the use of renewable fuels through the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Renewable and Low Carbon Fuel Requirements) Act.
And whereas the removal of Motor Fuel Tax exemptions and the additional application of the Carbon Tax to the production and sale of pure (100%) biofuels in 2010 has had a negative impact on biofuel producers and suppliers within BC, and has resulted in a decrease in the availability of pure renewable fuels that have the greatest potential to reduce fossil carbon emissions.
Therefore be it Resolved That the Province of BC immediately remove the Carbon Tax from the entire biofuel portion of all fuel production and sales and restore the Motor Fuel Tax exemptions to the biofuel producers and suppliers of British Columbia, and provide further incentives to ensure that the renewable fuel sector continues as a viable industry for BC Consumers and provincial Greenhouse Gas reduction objectives.
On Friday September 30, 2011, the motion will be reviewed in Vancouver at the UBCM (Union of British Columbia Municipalities) Conference. If the UBCM supports the motion, there will be more pressure on the Government to remove the unfair taxation on biofuels. This could be our big breakthrough! Stay tuned for more information...

Harmac Donates Containers to CEA!
June 2011 - The Harmac Pulp Mill has donated 400 used totes to Cowichan Energy Alternatives for us in the growing B.C. Biofuel Network. Thanks to their generousity, these containers will be diverted from landfills and put to good use storing bio-diesel!

Collective Biofuels Conference on Vancouver Island!
Cowichan Energy Alternatives and the Cowichan Bio-Diesel Co-Op were proud hosts of the 2011 Collective Biofuels Conference. The CBC brings renewable energy experts, enthusiasts and interested beginners together to discuss all things biofuels, with a focus on biodiesel. Moving the Collective Biodiesel Conference to Canada from Washington D.C. and changing the name to Biofuels seemed risky, but it paid off. Would attendees follow the conference across North America? Could we attract a local base? Thankfully the answer to both was yes. People came from BC and across Canada, ten U.S. states were represented including North Carolina, Texas and Hawaii, and we even had someone come from Iceland! The spirit of the conference was alive and well at this year's event, with a palpable excitement as attendees delved into all aspects of biofuels.

Community Biodiesel Processor Grand Opening
July 2011 - With the new community biodiesel processor at Bing’s Creek, sustainable vehicle fuel can now be processed in Duncan!
The new processor will close the sustainable fuels loop in the Cowichan Valley – taking waste cooking oil from area residents and restaurants, processing it into biodiesel, and selling it at the 2999 Allenby Road card lock in Duncan to CB-DC members.
The Grand Opening of the Bing’s Creek Biofuels Facility took place Wednesday, July 27th. This community-scale processor is located at 3900 Drinkwater Road in Duncan.

July 2011 - The Co-op is thrilled to announce that after many years of hard work, fundraising and collaboration, the Cowichan Biofuel Facility is now up and running! In fact, last week CEA processed the first 1000L of locally recycled waste cooking oil into a clean, golden B100. While the facility is still not 100% operational, we now have the ability to better control the quantity and quality of Co-op biofuels for Co-op members – and this will better as we continue to improve and innovate the process!
In celebration of this exciting milestone the Co-op would like to reward the members that stood by us through all the growing pains with a Big B100 giveaway!
